The first time I saw her, she was standing under the scorching sun, her face glistening with sweat, her tray of bananas perfectly balanced on her head. She had a tired but determined look in her eyes, the kind that spoke of endless struggles, yet she still managed a smile at every potential customer.

Her name was Amaka.

People passed by her, some buying, some haggling, and some laughing behind her back. Illiterate banana seller, they mocked. She should go and learn a skill instead of roaming the streets.

I watched from my car, parked a short distance away, as she dealt with rude customers with grace, as she stood tall despite the insults. There was something about hersomething rare, something precious.

I was a young entrepreneur, well-educated and financially comfortable, but I had never believed in judging people by their status. That day, as I stepped out of my car and approached her stall, I saw something different in Amaka.

She wasnt just a banana seller.

She was a woman with dignity.

A woman with a story.

And I wanted to know her story.

How much for one bunch? I asked, my voice soft.

She looked up at me, her brown eyes filled with curiosity and surprise. Maybe she wasnt used to men like me buying from her.

Two hundred naira, sir, she replied, her voice carrying the melody of her Igbo accent.

I smiled. Give me five bunches.

She hesitated. Ah, oga, na plenty be that o. I hope say you get change?

I chuckled. I have change, dont worry.

As she packed the bananas into a nylon bag, I noticed her handsstrong, calloused, hands that had known hardship. I wanted to ask about her life, but I knew it wasnt the right time.

When I paid, she hesitated again before taking the money, staring at it like she wasnt sure it was real. Then, she looked up at me and smile
